From vision to dream, how are children's bikes made?

Do you want to know how and why the Beany bikes were created and how long the owner Roman Blažek had to travel from the first sketch on paper to the first sold piece? In today's article, we'll let you take a look under the hood of the development of the lightest kids' bikes on the market.

The bike that wasn't

The impetus for the creation of Beany and the beginning of the development of children's bikes was the simple need of our owner, Roman Blazek, to find the best bikes for his children. But even after a very careful market research, he didn't find anything that met his idea of the ideal bike for his daughter and son in terms of quality and price. So he decided to make them himself. After all, his many years of experience in the production of sports equipment and his activity in the cycling world were the best preparation.

Right from the start it was clear - the bikes had to be the lightest on the market and have a lightweight sporty design that would appeal not only to parents but also to children. They won't be a smaller version of an adult bike, but instead will be developed specifically for the needs of children, respecting their physiology and all the components on the bike will be chosen so that they are great and easy for children to handle. This was also the reason why Roman Blažek worked with physiotherapists from FTVS to develop the ideal bicycle .

From paper to laboratory

The first bike designs were created on paper and it took several months to produce the first rough prototype, which went to the FTVS laboratories for testing. Here the frame went through a very careful and demanding vetting process. All the tests took into account the child's proportions, for example the proportion of the frame to the length of the torso, arms or legs, and the frame had to be re-adjusted based on the results. The result was a frame that perfectly matched the child's build and the needs and abilities of young cyclists.

Fighting for every gram

The goal was to have the lowest possible bike weight, but at the same time quality components that fit the child's proportions perfectly. The highest quality and lightest aluminium was chosen for the frame, which is also used for high-end adult bikes. This is because this material can be made up to three times weaker using special technology, thus reducing the final weight.

After achieving the lowest possible weight, the frame was subjected to another series of very rigorous tests and trials. The next step was to choose handlebars, cranks and wheels that not only fit the child's body perfectly, but were also of high quality and, most importantly, light enough. After the first fitting, however, the bike was heavier than the original plan, so it was necessary to start from scratch and push the weight to the lowest possible minimum. Beany went through this round about three times, but all the hard work paid off. The result is a great bike with top quality components that fully respects the body proportions and needs of children.

All bike sizes have passed very rigorous tests and are tested to roughly three times the child's weight. Thus, the ZERO 20 bike has a 70 kg load capacity, and the junior ZERO 29 even has a 120 kg load capacity, which means that even if it is not primarily intended for adults, it can safely carry them.

Work that has paid off

In the case of Beany bikes, it's clearly worth waiting for the best. It took two and a half years from the first sketch to the first Eurobikes trade show where the bikes were first displayed, and the first bike sold. It was a time full of very hard work, but also enthusiasm, passion and joy as the dream of the best kids bike on the market started to become a reality.

Now, after another two years, we at Beany can see how much our work was worthwhile. Beany is synonymous with the joy of exercise and it's amazing to see how enthusiastic and how happy children are to ride our bikes. And it is their enthusiasm, the enthusiasm of their parents, and most importantly the incredibly positive feedback from the market that drives us forward. We don't rest on our laurels, but we are always working to make our bikes even better and to fit their little owners even better. We've got lots of new things in store for spring 2023. Are you looking forward to it? Then keep an eye on us so you don't miss out on the world of the lightest Beany kids bikes!
