A basic rule of thumb is that the normal grip on the handlebars should match the angle at which two people shake hands. It is common for children to not hold the handlebars as they should, but to lean on them with a clenched fist and flip them over just to shift or brake. Watch out for this. This habit must be taught from the start.
Why is proper handlebar grip important ?
- Better control of the bike
- easier breathing
- better stability thanks to the right grip
- better stability when sitting on the bike
- easier turning of the handlebars thanks to the larger handlebar lever
- more dynamic shifting of the centre of gravity during changes in riding style
